Just got your new baby? Congratulations!

Hi, my name is Casey and I created this blog to share with parents of newborn on what’s the best and most cost effective way of creating a safe environment in your home for your new arrival in the family.

Babies are definitely a bundle of joy and pride BUT it’s our duty, as parents, to make sure they are kept safe and out of harms way, at all times.

Do you know 8 out 10 homes in the US aren’t safe for babies? Just take a quick glance in your home right now and you will agree that they were NOT designed with our baby’s safety in mind.

I didn’t really bother about safety much until 2-years ago, our son Christian, almost died in a freak accident at home. He fell from the stairs leading to our bedroom, tumbling down 15 steps injuring himself really bad.

I cried!!! How could we have let this happen? Maybe, because I thought we could ignore safety and safe some money!  We just didn’t think our baby son, would have been able to climb up the stairs on his own. How wrong were we!

Christian under went surgery and was admitted in ER for  2-weeks. It was one of the  saddest moments in our lives!

We prayed to GOD , our son would get better and we prayed he wouldn’t have sustained any permanent injuries. Our prayers were listened and we received a call after 17 days, that we could bring him home.

From that day onwards, we pledged to make sure our entire home was ‘baby home safety‘ equipped with at least the basic safety measures.  Now that we knew the dangers surrounding our children at home, we just had to do the right thing and protect them to the best of our ability.

Babies, when they’re newly born, they’re not so difficult to manage, but as soon as they start to crawl, it’s a different story then!

Crawling is ok but its their ‘need to know’ behaviour which, IF not dealt with properly, could lead to accidents.

There are many areas within our homes right now, which could be extremely dangerous, especially for toddlers and newborn.

I’ve prepared basic baby home safety checklist for you. These are jujst some of the basic measures we took after reading from a book I downloaded on the Internet.

If you’d like, you could take a look at Judy’s “Baby Safety Report”. Its a great resource with helpful tips and I would highly recommend it to you especially if you’re a new parent.

It helped us save a lot of time and money.

8 Quick Tips

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<Tip 1>
Bookshelves & Cupboards
If you have books or clothes, you’ll most likely have bookshelves and cupboards.
Bookshelves & Cupboard Anti-tip
How dangerous can these be? Extremely! Can you imagine a baby trying to climb up onto one? Usually, the cheaper bookshelves do not come with a heavy base therefore making them very light and can be tumbled upon.
Safety Advice: Bolt your bookshelves tightly to the wall using a ‘furniture anti-tip’ device. Or better still; place it in a different room altogether, away from the reach of your baby.
<Tip 2> Table cloths
They make the dining area cozy and welcoming don’t they?
Fold or remove table cloths
But have you realized the ends of your table cloth which is hanging freely? Do you have bottles of jam or pickles on the table? Babies are a curious lot and whatever that’s hanging or moving, they want to discover and most often and most often in their haste of discovering things, they might try to climb up onto the table using the ends of a table cloth. Unimaginable!
Safety advice: Remove the table cloth altogether, at least for the first few early years. The other option would be to tuck the ends of the cloth beneath a plastic sheet with clips so that they’re not hanging loosely.
<Tip 3> Electrical cords
Another hazardous device. Your standing fan or TV which you’ve plugged in
Hide cords with duct tape
your living or bedroom comes with a longer than necessary cable.  Since, they’re lying on the floor, babies may think it as a play thing and not see the danger. What if they start pulling a live wire or taking a bite off the cable? These types of accidents are more common they you may think.
Safety advice: Tape down any loose cables or wires on the floor using similar color tapes as your wall or floor color. If they can’t see it, they can’t reach it.
<Tip 4> Electrical Sockets
In their curiosity, they may poke their little tiny fingers into the holes of a
socket. Or what if they used a metal object and started drilling into the holes?
Safety advice: Use socket covers to cover those reachable sockets. They’re cheap and long lasting. Basically, these covers prevent a baby or a toddler from poking or prying into the holes with metal objects or using their fingers.
<Tip 5> Chemicals & Detergents
Tuck away from their reach
Do you have chemicals like Roundup or bleach lying around? Make sure you tuck them away safely in cabinets. Soaps, hand wash, washing machine liquid soap, or even items on your dressing table i.e. Perfumes, deodorants, hair-sprays etc. Can your baby easily reach them? You don’t want your baby accidentally putting these bottles in their mouth.
Safety advice: Tuck away, all chemicals, detergents, medicines and dressing table items in cabinets out of reach of your baby.
<Tip 6> Small & Tiny Objects
Is your working area or your writing table accessible to your baby?
Small objects, stationery etc
Paperclips, pens, pencils, small pen-knives, blades are just some of the dangerous items for a baby. In their curiosity, they may swallow these items and this can become a ‘life-threat’ in some cases. My neighbor’s 2 year old daughter actually chewed and swallowed half a pencil because she thought the pencil tasted good.
Safety advice: Always make sure, these small stationery objects are kept away in drawers and if possible, lock these drawers if you’re not working on the table. Incase, you suspect your baby has swallowed something, DO NOT try to forcibly take out the item on your own. Instead, rush him/her to the clinic.
<Tip 7> Sharp Edges
Did you realize babies are quite wobbly? They tend to fall very often especially when they’re trying to walk. Well, that’s how they learn how to walk.
Furniture edge covers
But for a year of a babies life, they can’t seem to keep their balance or walk in a straight line which is why falling can cause them injury. What if they lost their balance and accidentally bumped into corners of a dining table, coffee table, cabinets, furniture legs etc.
Safety advice: You can easily get furniture edge-covers these days at very low prices and you should cover those sharp edges as much as you can for your baby’s safety.
<Tip 8> Baby Safety Gates
Obviously now we realised this is perhaps one of the most important baby safety gadgets!
You must install safety gates wherever possible as this will prevent your baby from exploring areas of the house which they’re not supposed to explore i.e. kitchen, staircases, bed-rooms, toilets, bathrooms etc.
Baby Safety Gates
Make ‘out-of bounds’ areas in your home and  the best way to do this is to place child safety gates.
Safety advice: Place safety gates which are strong and durable. Some gates are so flimsy that a baby who is relatively strong or places some force, can at times, get the gate opened.
These are just some of the safety measures you may want to consider and apply.
There are many more essential safety steps one needs to take such as,
- Making sure your crib meets the safety standards
- Placing the right window and door guards
- How to travel safely with your baby
- How to make sure your child is safe even when they are with someone else.
- And so much more…
